Why pay $12 for a bar of soap?

Is $12 too high for a bar of soap? Why buy Simon’s Soapbox products when you can grab a bar of Ivory Soap for a couple bucks at the Shoppers Drug Mart? Or maybe a $7 bar from a local hobbyist at a craft fair?

Product prices reflect business costs, values and goals. Simon's Soapbox isn't a hobby. Our goal is run a financial sustainable business that provides meaningful work to both of us as a brother and sister team.

When Simon’s Soapbox moved from a hobby to a business 2021, we took on marketing, packaging, insurance, customer service and website costs so that we can make great soap for our customers.

Different businesses have different values and goals. Large manufacturers may focus on providing products for price conscious shoppers. They streamline their business to minimize expenses to offer a product at a low price point. Small hobbyists at local markets may price their soap at $6-8 to cover their basic costs of materials, time and home printed labels. These are fair values and goals, but Simon’s Soapbox has a different vision.

Two core values for Simon’s Soapbox are top quality ingredients and fair and meaningful work. And so

  1. We don’t chase cheap ingredients to compete on price. We choose organic unrefined shea butter, olive oil and essential oils. Quality ingredients make better soap.
  2. We believe that people with disabilities ought to have the opportunity of meaningful employment. Simon’s Soapbox isn’t a hobby it is a job.
  3. Our commitment to fair and meaningful work extends to our suppliers. This is why we are committed to using Fair Trade Shea butter from a Social Enterprise in Ghana. And why we choose a local printing company who hires people with disabilities to print our packaging.

Being a fair employer is more costly but has a big social impact.

We all need soap. We recognize that our soap may be out of some people’s budget and are glad that there a low priced soaps available in Canada so we can all keep clean regardless of our income. Simon’s Soapbox soap is bold scent with a bold story for those who lead with purpose one lather at a time.
